According to Kunming Customs, the total supervised and released import and export freight volume through the China-Laos Railway reached 4.2177 million tons in 2023, representing a remarkable year-on-year increase of 94.91%.

Since the opening of the China-Laos Railway over two years ago, customs authorities have vigorously promoted the construction of “smart customs” by leveraging “technology + informatization” to empower intelligent supervision. For instance, advanced railway container inspection equipment (H986) has been deployed, enabling the scanning of single-column trains in just 1-2 minutes. In addition, precise inspection and swift clearance have been ensured through the application of high-tech supervision equipment such as “radar-induced” spray disinfection and radiation detection gates, significantly improving risk identification efficiency and overall supervision effectiveness, as well as achieving the organic integration of national security and efficient customs clearance. These measures play a positive role in supporting the high-quality development of cross-border freight transportation on the China-Laos Railway.

With the impetus of the China-Laos Railway, the importation of distinctive products such as fruits, iron ore, and rubber from Southeast Asian countries like Laos and Thailand continues to expand. Simultaneously, Chinese electromechanical products and new high-tech products enter Southeast Asian countries via the China-Laos Railway. The China-Laos Railway has formed a transportation network connecting 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) including the Bohai Economic Rim, Yangtze River Delta, and Pearl River Delta economic circle domestically and radiates externally to 12 BRI countries such as Laos and Thailand, facilitating trade, investment, services, finance, and other aspects of cooperation between China and ASEAN countries.

As of December 31, 2023, Kunming Customs has supervised and released a total of over 6.4 million tons of import and export freight through the China-Laos Railway.
